Golf – Beginner Basics III – Mastering The Long Game

The game of golf has many facets, skills and techniques to it. The important thing to keep in mind as you learn the basics of golf is to keep at it. Yes, you will have many low moments inter-mingled with your high moments, sometimes to the point where you think of packing it all in. Don’t even go there. Carry on with your practice and learn from what people have taught you and what you have observed yourself by watching other people’s game and you will get it right. Keep focused and you will reap the rewards if you remain dedicated to the cause.
Now moving on, what exactly is the “long game”? When you hear golfers refer to the “Long Game” what they basically mean is your drives (shots off the tee) and fairway shots; in other words, everything except the shots you make to get onto the green.
Each and every hole has a different difficulty level, different par and distinctive, and in some cases unique hazards, so instructing you to use your Driver on every tee would be blatantly wrong.
This is something you will learn over the course of time and as your experience levels and your game progression also evolve, you will learn the various shots you make according to the club, the positioning of the ball and your personal swing techniques.
Broadly speaking, the lower the club number, the longer and lower your ball will go. A 4-iron shot will travel long and low and will most probably roll, whereas a 9-iron shot will have much more loft and go less distance both in the air and on the ground.
Don’t the professionals on television make it look so simple. They consistently hit the ball long and straight and they never seem to miss-hit the ball making it dribble along the ground ten feet or so, nor do they ever seem to completely miss the ball. Annoying, isn’t it!!
Driving is very important to the game, and many hours spent at the local driving range will inevitably reap rewards and help to improve your distance. Initially experiment with the same club to see what works for you if you move the ball forward or backward in your stance.
If you are in a position to do so, take a lesson from a golf professional, if possible, and learn the proper swing from the outset. What you learn may well be priceless.
Mastering the long game will help you get to the green in fewer strokes, keeping your score and, very importantly, your frustration levels down. Believe me, you will encounter many, many frustrating moments during your golfing days.
Remember that it takes a long time and a lot of effort to learn consistency. But above all, stick at it – it will come good and above all – remember to have fun!
